It is an innate disease caused by an extra extra chromosome in the cells (a person has 23 pairs of chromosomes, down syndrome has 3 chromosomes of 21).

There are different degrees of mental retardation and a wide range of physical anomalies. If you later become a mother, there is a high probability that the child will have Down syndrome.

Tests made from fluid taken from the mother’s womb during pregnancy (amniocentesis) can determine if the baby has Down syndrome. In this way, families can decide whether they want to have a child with Down syndrome or not.

Children with Down syndrome have a short stature, limited movements and heavy, open mouth and tongue out, open forehead and small head, upturned eyes and small ears, prominent and low.

The nose is small, and the root of the nose is flattened. The teeth are missing, small and irregular. It has a flattened head towards the back and a very curved nape.

Hands are usually short and large. Mental retardation ranges from moderate to much more serious disabilities.

A large number of concomitant diseases can be observed in children with Down syndrome. Children with Down syndrome are more emotionally warm-blooded. Down syndrome is usually understood from the physical characteristics of the child. The exact diagnosis is made by a blood test (chromosome analysis).

If you have a child with Down syndrome, your doctor will recommend a support program for you and your child to maximize their current skills. Such children are able to use their skills, and many also learn to read and manage their lives independently with constant training and support.

Most adults can work in simple jobs. It should be remembered that it is not a disease that has a cure. Only treatments related to concomitant and frequent diseases can be performed. They should be monitored for growth and development, heart diseases, eye diseases, otolaryngology and orthopedic aspects. The expected life expectancy has decreased slightly.
